Undergraduate Degree Programs
The Department of Statistics & Computer Science at the University of Kelaniya was established with the objective of addressing the growing demand for expertise in quantitative analysis, computing, and data-driven decision-making. Over the years, it has evolved in line with rapid technological and scientific developments, continuously updating its curricula to reflect emerging trends in computing, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and applied statistics. The department has built a strong academic culture supported by a team of academic staff, laboratory facilities, and an emphasis on both theoretical foundations and practical applications. Through teaching, research, and industry engagement, the department contributes to national capacity building and the development of skilled graduates who are well-prepared for both local and global career pathways.
At present, the department offers four internal undergraduate degree programmes under the Faculty of Science, designed to cater to diverse academic interests and career aspirations in statistics, computer science, and related interdisciplinary areas. These programmes are structured to provide a balanced combination of core theoretical knowledge, hands-on laboratory experience, project-based learning, and exposure to real-world problem solving. The curriculum follows a credit-based modular system and supports progressive learning from foundational concepts to advanced and specialized topics, ensuring academic depth as well as flexibility. In addition to its internal programmes, the department also contributes to expanding access to higher education through distance learning. The Bachelor of Science (External) Degree is offered by the Faculty of Science at the University of Kelaniya through its Centre for Distance and Continuing Education (CDCE). This external degree programme is intended to provide flexible learning opportunities for individuals who are unable to pursue full-time internal study, thereby extending the university’s academic reach to a wider community.
